Purpose:His purpose is to describe how he addresses some common surgical problems in oculoplastics using diagrams, photographs, and video. Such a book is helpful for residents, fellows, and general practitioners who are trying to learn or review some of the basic techniques of the subspecialty.

Audience:It is intended for readers who have a foundation of fundamental ophthalmic and oculoplastic knowledge. It will be useful as a guide to some basic techniques in oculoplastic surgery for residents in ophthalmology, fellows in oculoplastics, or general ophthalmologists in practice. The author is a respected authority who trains fellows in oculoplastics.

Features:The book covers basic techniques for correction of eyelid malposition and reconstruction, lacrimal surgery and orbital surgery. Excellent pictures augment descriptions of how to perform each individual procedure in a step-wise fashion. Clinical pearls are provided as well as brief reviews of possible complications. The DVD-ROM provides videos of actual procedures. The main shortcoming of this publication, which the author admits, is that it provides only one perspective on how to approach a particular surgical problem when many other techniques exist.

Assessment:This is a very useful manual on some of the common surgical problems for residents completing a rotation in oculoplastics. It also would be of help to new fellows needing a basic stepping stone to some of the more complex procedures. The book is comparable to Oculoplastic Surgery: The Requisites in Ophthalmology, Nerad (Mosby, 2001) or A Manual of Systematic Eyelid Surgery, 3nd edition (Elsevier, 2006). Oculoplastic Surgery provides superior photographs in color and a DVD. However, it is not an extensive a reference for surgical techniques as it covers only one approach to an oculoplastic problem.
